Summer's Silver and Sylvan Scenery
Summer's Silver and Sylvan Scenery on the Suwannee River (sometimes alliteration is irresistible!). But really, a trip to the Suwannee River in Florida is a sweet adventure of long back roads, overhung at times with huge old oaks and bordered by lush green pastures and swampy cypress glades. The Suwannee meanders out of the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia and flows some 266 blackwater miles to the Gulf of Mexico. It is an unspoiled Wild and Scenic river with hundreds of artesian springs along its length, 21 first magnitude (out of a total 33 in Florida). So though the water is stained dark by tannins, take heart; you can find blue spring holes small and large without much effort if, like me, you can't wait to jump in. Just watch out for the huge sturgeon!
